Our two biggest projects in the county during 2010-11 were building a reservoir and our on-going work to bring cleaner seas to East Sussex.
We also began an important environmental project to replace 1.5km of sewer at the Cuckoo Trail, near Polegate. The sewer runs under the popular footpath and has suffered a number of bursts.
We started a project to upgrade our wastewater treatment works at Barns Green, near Horsham, to improve the quality of water recycled to Parsons Brook and meet the demand of population growth. We also started a £650,000 scheme at our Warnham works to ensure treated wastewater leaving the site is cleaner than ever.
We replaced 24km of water mains in Crawley and Hastings to reduce the risk of burst pipes, leaks and interruptions to supply.
An upgrade to benefit the River Ouse began at Staplefield Wastewater Treatment Works, near Haywards Heath. The scheme will ensure recycled wastewater meets tough standards set by the Environment Agency. We also completed a £3 million scheme to upgrade the sewer network in Haywards Heath to allow for population growth.
New equipment was installed at Battle Wastewater Treatment Works in a £800,000 project to benefit the River Brede and, at Chiddingfold, we invested £660,000 in a scheme to remove phosphates from recycled wastewater and protect the balance of the eco-system in Chiddingfold Stream.
A further £915,000 was invested at Collier Road in Hastings to increase the size of the sewers and reduce the risk of flooding while, in Midhurst, we replaced a 400m sewer with a stronger pipe to prevent bursts.
