Collecting rainwater in a water butt helps keep your garden healthy and the environment thriving.

Just one water butt holds enough rainwater to fill a watering can 25 times and average rainfall in the South East can fill your butt up to 450 times a year.

Plants much prefer rainwater to tap water and using less tap water helps save money on water bills.

It also means we can take less water from rivers and our environment in order to provide drinking water supplies.

Southern Water customers can buy discounted water butts in our online shop or download a voucher for 20 per cent off butts and watering cans at B&Q.

It’s easy to fit a water butt – watch our step-by-step guide to find out how.

Water butt campaign

We’ve launched a campaign to help community groups and organisations in our water supply area become waterwise with water butts.

Groups such as schools, churches, village halls, playgroups, scouts and wildlife groups can apply for a free water butt to put to good use on a community building.
