April showers only dent the drought - May 3, 2012

The recent rain has been very welcome because it benefits river flows and reservoirs and helps to keep down demand.

Unfortunately, it is not enough to make up for nearly two years of below-average rainfall and will have little impact on the underground sources which make up nearly 70 per cent of our drinking water supply.

Because we are officially in drought, it is even more important to find and fix water leaks and we have 250 people working round the clock to do just that.

We calculate leakage by analysing water use at night, when demand is at its lowest and pressure is at its greatest, and the current water restrictions can help our teams to find leaks faster because of the absence of running sprinklers or hosepipes.

You continue to play a big part in helping to drive down leakage and made a fantastic 46,300 calls to our free Leakline number in 2011.

This helped us in 2011/12 to record our second lowest level of leakage and our performance is currently the best of all water and sewerage companies in the country.

Thank you for your help to achieve this and please continue to call our Leakline on 0800 820999 if you spot a leak. Finding and fixing leaks is just one way in which we are managing water resources
