Metering programme hits 100,000 mark

Over 100,000 meters have now been installed under Southern Water’s Universal Metering Programme (UMP).

Installations began in earnest late last year, with a total of 500,000 meters being installed across the Southern Water service area by 2015.

Installation teams are currently working in Southampton in Hampshire and Medway in Kent, with work in Crawley in West Sussex also underway.

Parts of eastern Southampton have already been metered under the programme, along with Horsham and Littlehampton in Sussex, and Rochester, Strood and Chatham in Kent.

The process of switching customers, who have had a meter installed, to metered charges is underway, with the first 6 month bills set to go out in the early part of 2012.

You can find out more about the metering programme via the dedicated metering website www.southernwater.co.uk/metering

MPs praise schools’ water success

School pupils from across Hampshire, Sussex and Kent left MPs impressed after telling them about their innovative ideas for saving water.

The youngsters from schools in Southampton, Crawley and Medway got the chance to brief their local Member of Parliament when each paid a visit to present them with prize money totalling £20,000 from the 2011 Water Design Challenge.

The Challenge, an award-winning scheme run by Southern Water and the Design Council, aims to inspire youngsters to cut their water and carbon footprint, all with a helping hand from professional designers and water industry experts.

Fort Pitt Grammar School from Chatham beat off nine other schools from across the South East to take top honours with a design which would reduce the amount of water used in the school’s toilets by a third, saving around £5,000 on their annual water bill.

Meet Peter the Meter

Southern Water’s metering programme has its very own poster boy.

Peter the Meter is the star of a new video game for mobile phones, as well as an animated short film.

Both have been produced to provide customers with key information and advice on saving water, energy and money in a fun and simple way.

The Peter the Meter application, or ‘app’ for short, will soon be available to download for free onto Apple i-Phones, i-Pads and i-Pod Touchs from the Apple App store, whilst the film will be accessible via the metering programme’s website www.southernwater.co.uk/metering

More than 10 games have been designed for the app, each with a simple tip for saving water and energy.

The Peter the Meter film sees Peter guiding you on a tour of a house to show how you can use water more efficiently.
